What is Conscious PR?
con·scious pub·lic re·la·tions
/ˈkän(t)SHəs/ /ˈpəblik rəˈlāSHənz/
noun
The act of ethically conducting media outreach to pursue, secure, and deliver impactful press opportunities that enhance brand exposure
I never realized that I was an industry disruptor when I started my brand, until it was reflected back to me over and over again. Writers and producers would tell me that they loved working with me and truly valued my friendship. Clients would express gratitude instead of asking when their next press placement was going to come (like right after sending them something huge). And even other publicists would reach out to tell me that they loved what I was doing, because they’d never seen anything like it before!
I am going to be honest, there’s a lot of toxic behavior within the media industry that never really sat well with me. There’s tons of bribing to gain press opportunities, manipulation, fake friendships, love bombing, lying, over-promising and under-delivering, and competitiveness that are all parts of the Publicist + Client / Publicist + Publicist / Publicist + Media Contact relationship.
However, when I started my business, I vowed to never run my brand that way. I had a love/hate relationship with my industry for years because of this, and knew that I had to conduct things differently. — I never understood why my coworkers would act rude and catty when I got a really cool press feature for my clients (even though we were on the same team), or why some writers would only work with me if I took them out to a really expensive lunch and stroked their ego for an hour.
To me, conscious pr is about leaving all of that sketchy shit behind, supporting brands that are making a difference, working with media contacts that align with my values, and celebrating all of our wins with my team big or small!
I find it so rewarding to be able to support the vision of my brands as well as my fave writers, producers, and editors to maximize value for their audiences. We are all a beautiful piece of the big media puzzle, and it’s honestly so cool to work together while delivering content for the masses.
